PLANNING FRAMEWORK
Estimate essential and flexible spending, pensions, Social Security, portfolio withdrawals, taxes, inflation, insurance, and a cash reserve. Test the plan against longer life, market declines, and higher health costs.
U.S. retirement toolkit ↗Retirement accounts, life insurance, and transfer-on-death arrangements generally follow their own beneficiary forms. Review primary and contingent beneficiaries after marriage, divorce, birth, death, or a major account change.
IRS beneficiary guidance ↗A will states who should receive probate property and names an executor; it can also nominate guardians. It does not automatically control assets that pass by beneficiary designation, joint ownership, or a properly funded trust.
Texas wills and estates ↗A trust can provide management continuity during incapacity and may keep properly titled assets out of probate. It must be created, funded, maintained, and coordinated with the will and beneficiary forms; it is not automatically a tax shelter.
CFPB trustee and caregiver guides ↗A living will—often called a directive to physicians—records treatment wishes if you cannot speak for yourself. A medical power of attorney names a trusted health-care decision-maker. These are separate from a financial power of attorney.
Texas advance-directive forms ↗This document lets a chosen agent handle authorized financial matters and can remain effective during incapacity when drafted as durable. Choose the agent carefully, define authority clearly, and consider oversight safeguards.
